Pakistan Elections 08

February 19, 2008 / by zuhair250

There was a whole lot of uncertainity about the elections in Pakistan. Peaceful, free and fair set aside, there was confusion on wheather the elections would be held or not. It all settled down with the rising sun of February 18, 2008. Elections were held on schedule with thght security. Most importantly, these elections were actually transpaarent. Not a single party accused anyone of rigging. Neither did any one complain about the crediability. Hundreds of foreign observers from around the world had gathered to inspect the elections. They would all go home resonably satisfied.

The results of the elections have not been so surprising. With the popularity of the formner ruling party crashing like the Karachi stock Market, it was expected that they wont have enough representation in the comming setup. Moderate and modern parties have won most seats.

It was somewhat surprising that the religious parties have been rejected by the people of North West Frontier Province, the province that has had a strong hold of religious parties for quite some time. This time around there was a strong resistance from Awami Natinal Party. This party mostly stresses upon progress and development of the country. The are under attack by the talibans in recent times as they are strictly against millitancy. Its good to see that people are supporting their perspective and have given them majority.  But they would have to form a coilition woth the PPP which is the second mojor party in the province.

As many as 23 ministers of the former federal cabinet could not win the elections. The haad of the former rulling party, Shujaat Hussain also lost the elections. Many peopple think that this elections result is a referendum for President Pervez Musharraf. As all his close allies have been washed away. Musharraf however thinks that he would still prolong his stay. My sincere suggestion would be that he should himself step down gracefully befire the assembly forcefully nullify him power.

The next step after the elections is the formation of the new government. Many surprisies are still in store for the world. This story would continue in my coming
